Terms of Service

Effective: 3 August 2026

These terms are an agreement between you and Assembly Not Included, a sole trader based in the United Kingdom ("we", "us"), for the use of Smoke Signal (smokesignal.sh). By creating an account or using the service you accept them. We've kept them as short and readable as we could.

TL;DR

  • Smoke Signal delivers push notifications from your tools and scripts to devices that have opted in.
  • Sending costs credits: you get a free grant when you start publishing, and you can buy more. Credits have no cash value and payments are handled by Stripe; we never see your card.
  • You're responsible for what you send. Recipients choose to subscribe and can leave at any time.
  • The service is provided as-is: notification delivery is best-effort, so don't rely on it for anything critical.
  • You can delete your account whenever you like; we can suspend accounts that abuse the service. If we ever close the service, you get at least 30 days' notice and your unspent purchased credits back.

The service

Smoke Signal is a web push notification relay: you get webhook URLs, anything that can make an HTTP request can fire them, and we deliver the message as a native push notification to every device subscribed to you. It is built for things like agent and CI alerts, deploy notices, and "your long-running job finished" pings, sent from your own systems to people who have been invited and have chosen to listen.

Recipients only ever receive notifications they opted into: a device subscribes to a publisher by claiming an invite, and can unsubscribe at any time. You cannot send to arbitrary strangers, phone numbers, or email addresses. That is by design, and it is what keeps this service useful rather than a spam cannon.

Your account

  1. You must be 16 or older and provide a valid email address you control.
  2. The service is passwordless: your email address is how you sign in and recover your account (you can add optional two-factor authentication in settings). If you permanently lose access to your email, you lose the account; we have no other way to verify it's you.
  3. Keep your webhook secrets and device credentials secret. Anything sent with your credentials is treated as sent by you. If a secret leaks, revoke it in the app.
  4. One person or organisation per account; you're responsible for anyone you let use it.

Acceptable use

Don't use Smoke Signal to:

  1. break the law, or push content that is illegal in the UK or in your jurisdiction;
  2. send spam or notifications that recipients did not genuinely opt into (including pressuring or tricking people into subscribing);
  3. distribute malware, phishing, or links designed to deceive;
  4. harass, threaten, or abuse anyone;
  5. send pornographic or sexually explicit content;
  6. impersonate a person or organisation (publisher names are self-chosen, and choosing one to deceive is a violation);
  7. infringe anyone's intellectual property or privacy;
  8. create multiple accounts to collect extra free credits or dodge limits or suspensions;
  9. resell, sublicense, or offer Smoke Signal to third parties as your own service without our written agreement (building tools and integrations that use your own account is exactly what the service is for, and is always welcome);
  10. probe, overload, or interfere with the service itself, or attempt to bypass its rate limits and security controls.

Beyond these rules, what you send to your subscribers is your business; any lawful use is welcome. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these rules. Where practical we'll warn you first, but for serious abuse we won't.

Credits

  1. Sending costs credits: one credit per accepted message per subscriber (a subscriber with several devices still costs one credit). When you activate publishing you receive a free grant of credits, and you can buy more.
  2. Credits, whether free or purchased, have no cash value, are non-transferable, never expire, and cannot be exchanged or withdrawn for money. They are a prepaid balance for using the service, nothing more.
  3. We may adjust the size of free grants, credit pricing of sends, and service limits (devices, keys, rate limits) to keep the service healthy. We won't retroactively confiscate a granted or purchased balance except on accounts closed for abuse.

Buying credits

  1. Prices are shown at the point of purchase. Payment is processed by Stripe; your card details go directly to Stripe and never touch our servers. Stripe issues your receipt.
  2. Purchased credits are delivered to your balance immediately.
  3. Refunds: credits already spent are not refundable. You can cancel a purchase within 14 days and we refund the unspent part of it; after that the purchase is final and we don't refund it beyond what the law requires. Credits never expire, so a balance you keep stays spendable. The details live in our Refund Policy.
  4. If a payment is reversed (a chargeback or dispute), the credits it bought are removed, which can leave your balance negative, and we may suspend sending until it's resolved. If you have a problem with a purchase, please talk to us before disputing the charge.

Sending and subscribers

  1. You own your content. Notification content is encrypted while queued, delivered end-to-end encrypted to each device, and scrubbed from our servers within minutes of hand-off completing. We keep delivery records (counts, timestamps, outcomes), never the text. You grant us only the licence needed to deliver it.
  2. Notifications expire. You choose each notification's lifetime, up to 24 hours. If a device stays unreachable past that lifetime, the notification is dropped and never delivered late. Credits pay for acceptance, so an expired or undelivered notification is not refunded; delivery is best-effort (see "No warranty").
  3. You're responsible for what you send. We are a relay: we don't review, endorse, or moderate notification content before delivery, and responsibility for it sits with the publisher who sent it.
  4. If your notifications carry personal data or sensitive material (codes, alerts, customer information), you are responsible for having the right to send it.
  5. Subscribers can unsubscribe at any moment, and we honour that immediately.

Service limits

The service enforces rate limits and quotas (per key, per account, per IP) to keep it fast and abuse-resistant. They may change. If you have a legitimate use that hits a limit, email us; we would like to hear about it.

Intellectual property

The Smoke Signal name, site, and service are ours. Your content and your publisher name (assuming you have the right to it) are yours. These terms transfer no ownership in either direction.

Termination

  1. By you: delete your account in the app at any time. Deletion becomes permanent after a 30-day safety window (sign back in within it to change your mind); see the Privacy Policy for exactly what that means.
  2. By us: we may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms or put the service or its users at risk.
  3. The service itself: Smoke Signal is a small, independent service and may change, shrink, or close. We may discontinue it at any time. If we do, we will give account holders at least 30 days' notice by email and refund the unspent portion of any credits you purchased. Free credits have no cash value and are not refunded. Beyond that notice and refund, closing the service is not a breach of these terms and no further compensation is owed.

No warranty

The service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind. In particular: push delivery is best-effort. Notifications pass through your browser vendor's push service and your device's settings, both outside our control, and may be delayed or dropped. Do not use Smoke Signal as the only channel for anything where a missed message could cause harm. Medical, safety, or emergency use is not what this is for.

Liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss, lost profits, lost data, or losses arising from missed, delayed, or misdelivered notifications, from content sent by publishers, or from suspension or discontinuation of the service. Our total liability to you is capped at the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits what cannot lawfully be excluded: liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or your statutory rights as a consumer.

Indemnity

If your use of the service, or content you send through it, breaks these terms and a third party brings a claim against us because of it, you agree to cover the losses and reasonable costs that claim causes us.

Changes to these terms

The current version always lives at smokesignal.sh/terms with its effective date. For material changes we'll notify account holders by email before they take effect; continuing to use the service after that means you accept the new terms. If you don't accept them, you can close your account and we will refund the unspent portion of any credits you purchased. A changelog lives at the bottom of this document.

Miscellany

If part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still stands. Not enforcing a term today doesn't waive it tomorrow.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and disputes belong to the courts of England and Wales. If you're a consumer living elsewhere, you keep any protections your local law grants that can't be agreed away.
